Geology (Earth Sciences)…it is at the fourth level in the hierarchy of Sciences, because it uses combined knowledge from Biology, Chemistry, Physics and a very good understanding of Mathematics. Studying towards my degree in Geology and Geophysics walked me through all the Sciences listed above, which broadened my view and understanding of this planet and the universe – the effect of integrated Sciences delivered through a holistic vision. Then I thought it would be a great idea to apply those methods and vision in Education, teaching Science without boundaries between its branches, integrating outdoor education principles and mindfulness techniques.
There are many studies that reveal the benefits of a holistic approach to education. I used it in my teaching for 15 years with a wide age range of students, from primary to university and I can confirm that all learn better and achieve more when they are regularly exposed to diverse healthy experiences, integrated into their daily learning routine. The short scientific explanation is that any new experience triggers the development of new skills, due to the creation of new neuronal paths in the brain, which in turn help the person perform better academically, make better decisions, become more resilient.
